APRIL: THE MONTH FOR NIGER DELTA AND ITS VARIOUS CONCEPTUALISATION

This month of April 2019 would encompass the conceptualisation of Niger Delta.

The need to want to know about Niger Delta led to my registration for a course titled  NIGER DELTA AGITATIONS AND THE NIGERIAN STATE in which I took classes for a whole semester which  was roughly 4 months, I know that 4 months is not enough to cover a broad area but it is a start. I want to use this medium to appreciate the course lecturer and everyone who have written or spoken about The Niger Delta. 

Like I said above April Post would be about conceptualising the Niger Delta.

Questions like what is the Niger Delta?

Where is it located?

 What are the different Conceptualisations of the Niger Delta?

INTRODUCTION. 

The strategic position of the Niger Delta as one of the leading zone for oil production in Nigeria and the world has made the area a local, national and global entity to be reckoned with. Thus different attempts and works have been made to conceptualise the Niger Delta. The presence of the accumulating conceptualisation and evidence however raises series of questions about the concept Niger Delta.

This months post would represents an effort to discuss the conceptualisation of Niger Delta. It would look at different perceptions of the Niger Delta such as Geographical conceptualisation, Cartographic conceptualisation, Political conceptualisation, Economical conceptualisation, Ethnographical conceptualisation.

It is important to note that Niger Delta has been perceived to be different things by different scholarship. Most conceptualisation has been explained through generalisation as a result of things, seen experienced or believed. By the end of this month, different conceptualisation  would have been looked, drawing into focus the controversies in the conceptualisation. Thus concluding that the controversies attending to the conceptualisation is an unnecessary distraction in the discourse of utmost importance  in Niger Delta agitations such as the Nigerian State and the issue of Niger Delta agitation, resource control, environmental challenges etc.
