WIDOWHOOD: The State of Losing a Spouse to Death

Death is as old as time and when there is life, death is bound to happen. Thus death is inevitable. It happens to men, women and children not only in Nigeria but all around the world. Meaning people die. What is astounding is the concept attached to death of a person who is married.

Are you wondering what the concept is?

The answer is Widowhood. This is the main focus of today’s discussion.

Widowhood as a concept implies the death of a spouse. Simply put, it is a situation when in a marriage, one spouse dies be it the man (husband) or the woman (Wife).

As a child, my thought about the concept was that it was applied only to women because of all the activities and rites faced by woman in Nigeria (which was showcased in her dressing and treatment .this also evident in Nigerian movies) when she lost her husband.

Some people still have the thought that widowhood still applies only to women which this post stands to correct.

Widowhood applies to both men (husbands) and women (wives). The men are called widower while women are widows.

The summary of today’s post is that widowhood is not a new phenomenon; it takes place in Nigeria, Africa and all over the world. It is just that the treatment, practises and rites attached to the concept varies. In some places the widow and widower are well taken care of while in other place there are records of ill treatment especially to the widow.

Next post will be A WIDOWER’S PLIGHT
