The Niger Delta is a vast coastal plain in the southernmost part of Nigeria. It is estimated to cover about 75,000 square kilometres, and it is the largest wetland in Africa and one of the largest in the world with an estimated population of 31 million people. It is in the area of one of the longest rivers which empties into the Atlantic Ocean between the Bights of Benin and Biafra, in the Gulf of Benin. The Niger Delta, in relation to Nigeria’s political economy, has been defined in geopolitical terms and in this regard, is made up of nine states namely Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers but in terms of oil production and petro-violence, there are three states of importance namely Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers. Most of the local people source of livelihood is farming, fishing, trading, food processing etc.[1]
