An Introduction to the Elements of Diplomacy in Uthman Dan Fodio Jihad 1804-1808

Warfare is not a recent phenomenon in Nigeria, Africa and the World. World War 1 and 2 as examples. In Nigeria before colonialism, different war was fought examples includes Owu war, Egba War, Ibadan Expansionist wars of  1840-1878 and the Uthman Dan  Fodio Jihad which has been recognised as the holy war from 1804-1808.

Today’s post aims to introduce  what this month posts would be about which is to examine and bring into limelight diplomatic and military strategy employed by Uthman Dan Fodio during the period of study. It includes the element of diplomacy and diplomatic relations such as negotiation , writing of treaties in the  war, usage of soft and coercive diplomacy to mention a few.

Before proceeding, it is important to ask a question. What is diplomacy? In its simplest form diplomacy is the management of communication and relationships between nations by members and employees of each nation’s government. Thus in relation to discussing the element  of diplomacy Uthman Dan Fodio, jihad the upcoming post would majorly look at how Uthman Dan Fodio  managed communication and relations between states during the Jihad.
