The last post was an introduction to Mexico from pre-colonial to colonial period. Here is the link
Today’s post is looking at the period from independence.
Independence and after independence era of Mexico was considered to be in shambles as the Mexican politics was chaotic and the presidency changed hands 75 times in 55 years (1821–76).[1] The newly economy was in fiascos and all these led to a standstill in development and the political economy of the new found state. Mexico had only what the colonial masters left for them which included depraved infrastructure, health centres etc. despite all these, western educational structure was left in forms of universities which the new independent state had to work with. During this period a lot happened starting with different Juntas, loss of Texas to the United States, Mexican revolution etc.
Period from (1970–1994) was characterized by Economic crisis, Earthquake of 1985 which caused chaos and changed the political landscape and economy from 1970-1990. This changed ushered in the Contemporary Mexico which was and still know for the United State interference in all ramification of Mexico through NAFTA which was aimed for economic resurgence (1994–present) but even after five years have being in favor of the US than Mexico.
To the surprise of many this period(contemporary period) shepherded the end of PRI rule in 2000 followed by several president who made a mandate to fight drugs[2] and drug cartels with the help of USA such as President Vicente Fox Quesada (2000–2006),President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa (2006–2012),President Enrique Peña Nieto etc in other words this period so far is known for its changes in governance and Drug war which has led to increase in crime rates, loss of life’s among others.[3]
This is a summary as there are more regarding the above subject. For more information consults different work and also the references below.
