THE STAMP ACT OF 1765

So today, we will start from where we stopped in the last post  which is the Stamp acts of 1765.

The Stamp Act was first directed tax that Britain had imposed on the colonies. This act placed taxes on all printed materials including legal papers, playing cards and newspaper. This meant that no one could sell pamphlets or newspaper.

The then  prime Minister Greenville believed that the colonist would accept the tax with little objection since similar  tax were common piece in England but American considered the Stamp act to be a direct tax paid directly to England rather than to their own  legislatives and again challenged parliaments authority to tax without representative. This led to the Stamp act congress which shall b discussed in the next post.
