THE SUGAR ACT

When you hear the sugar act what comes to your mind?

I am sure you thought of sugar, well you almost got it, read further to find out.

The sugar act also known as the Revenue act was more or less a revision of the existing custom regulation. It placed new duties on certain foreign imports such as foreign rum, wines, coffee especially on foreign rum from West Indies into the colonies.

The law angered Americans who claimed that Britain had no right to tax them because they had no representative in parliament and thus requested for a repeal of the law. The then Prime Minister Greenville countered that every member of the parliament represents every member of the parliament represent every member of the empire but the colonists refused to pay to tax and continued to smuggled goods thus leading to the Currency act.
